1. Our driver picks you up from your hotel, Train Station, or Airport in Khiva or Urgench to start the daytrip, recommended between 06:00–07:00 a.m. Please note Nukus Museum is closed every Monday; updated visiting times are available at http://museum.kr.uz/visiting/.
2. Drive 2–3 hours to the Karakalpak State Museum of Art (Nukus Museum), home to a world-famous collection of Russian and Soviet avant-garde paintings. Visitors are advised to spend 1–2 hours exploring the museum’s exhibits, experiencing both cultural and historical treasures of the region.
3. For lunch in Nukus City after the museum, recommended options include Cinnamon Café, Premier Lounge, Karakalpagim for local cuisine, or Neo Restaurant; alternatively, lunch can be enjoyed later at restaurants near the fortresses.
4. After about 40 minutes’ drive, arrive at Chilpik Kala, a Dakhma used by Zoroastrians for exposure of the dead. Constructed originally in the first centuries CE, it underwent rebuilding in the 7th–8th and 9th–10th centuries. The site features clay and stone ossuaries and offers a unique glimpse into ancient funerary practices.
5. Kizil Kala, dating to the Late Antique period (1st–4th centuries CE) and rebuilt in the 12th–13th centuries, served as a garrison or fortified manor house. Its walls and structures reflect Khorezm’s strategic importance during Mongol invasions and early medieval times.
6. Toprak Kala, from the 2nd–3rd centuries CE during the Kushan period, was the royal residence of Khorezm kings. The site at the northwestern corner of the settlement is one of the largest and best-preserved monumental buildings of the Kushan era in Central Asia, initially serving as a royal sanctuary and later an administrative citadel.
7. Stop at Akchakul Lake, a natural oasis with yurt camps and lakeside restaurants, offering swimming, sand baths, local meals, drinks, and even ice cream made from local milk—a perfect break in the desert landscape.
8. Ayaz Kala, one of the most spectacular fortresses in the region, is a cluster of three fortresses on a prominent hill at the eastern end of the Sultan-Uiz-dahg range. Founded around the 7th–8th centuries CE during the Afrighid period, it provided defense against nomad raids and features a tourist rest area with yurts overlooking a shallow, scenic lake.
9. After visiting all sites, return 90 minutes to Khiva or 60 minutes to Urgench. Drop-off options include hotels, Urgench Airport, or Khiva/Urgench Train Stations, concluding a full day immersed in Khorezm’s history, culture, and desert landscapes.
